Calories Explained: What They Are and Why They Matter
"Calories" is one of the most-used and least-understood words in nutrition. Understanding what a calorie actually is — and how energy balance works — takes a lot of the confusion out of managing your weight. Here's a simple, no-jargon explanation.
What Is a Calorie?
A calorie is simply a unit of energy. The calories in food measure how much energy that food provides your body. You burn calories constantly — to breathe, move, think and keep your heart beating — and you take them in through food and drink.
Energy Balance: The Core Concept
Your weight is governed by energy balance:
- Eat more calories than you burn → you gain weight
- Eat fewer calories than you burn → you lose weight
- Eat about the same → your weight stays stable
This is the foundation of weight management. Everything else — protein, carbs, meal timing — sits on top of this basic principle.
Where Calories Come From
The three macronutrients provide calories:
- Protein — 4 calories per gram
- Carbohydrates — 4 calories per gram
- Fat — 9 calories per gram (the most calorie-dense)
- (Alcohol provides 7 calories per gram)
This is why fatty and fried foods are so calorie-dense, and why protein and fibrous vegetables are easier to eat in volume.
How Many Calories Do You Need?
It varies by age, size, sex and activity, but many adults sit somewhere around 1,800–2,500 calories a day for maintenance. To lose weight, you eat slightly below your maintenance level — a calorie deficit.
Why Pre-Portioned Meals Help
The tricky part of managing calories is knowing how many are actually on your plate. Pre-made meals solve this — every MealPrep.nz meal has a clear calorie count on its nutrition panel, so you always know exactly what you're eating. Our Lean range sits at 400–550 calories, taking the guesswork out entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all calories equal?
For weight, a calorie is a calorie — but the source affects fullness, nutrition and health. 200 calories of chicken and veg fills you far more than 200 calories of soft drink.
How many calories should I eat to lose weight?
Slightly below your maintenance level. The exact number depends on your size and activity.
Do I have to count calories forever?
No — many people use it as a learning tool, then rely on portion-controlled meals to stay on track without counting.
How do I know the calories in your meals?
Every meal has a full nutrition panel showing calories, protein, carbs and fat.
