If you only change one thing about how you eat for weight loss, make it protein. A higher-protein diet is one of the most reliably effective strategies there is — not because protein is magic, but because of what it does to hunger, muscle and metabolism. Here's why it works, and how to do it without overhauling your whole life.

How Protein Drives Fat Loss

Weight loss ultimately comes down to a calorie deficit. Protein makes that deficit easier and better in three ways:

  • It keeps you fuller for longer. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient, so high-protein meals reduce hunger and cravings — the things that derail most diets
  • It protects your muscle. In a deficit, your body can break down muscle for energy. Adequate protein signals it to burn fat instead, so the weight you lose is the right weight
  • It costs more energy to digest. Protein has a higher "thermic effect" than carbs or fat — your body burns slightly more calories just processing it

The result: you eat less without feeling starved, and you keep the lean muscle that keeps your metabolism healthy.

How Much Protein for Weight Loss?

For fat loss while preserving muscle, aim for roughly 1.6–2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight. For an 80kg person, that's around 130–175g a day. A simple rule of thumb: get 30g+ of protein in every meal.

What a High-Protein Weight Loss Day Looks Like

The challenge is consistency — hitting that protein target at every meal, every day, while keeping calories in check. That's where done-for-you meals make it effortless. Our Lean range is built for exactly this:

  • 400–550 calories per meal
  • 30g+ protein to keep you full and protect muscle
  • Real, whole-food ingredients
  • Fully portioned, so you stay in your deficit without counting

Favourites include the Cajun Chicken & Cauliflower Rice and Philly Cheese Beef on Cauli Mash.

Real Kiwi Results

This approach isn't theory. MealPrep.nz customers eating high-protein, calorie-controlled meals have seen real results — Liam lost 38kg, April 18kg, and Eden 13kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose muscle on a high-protein diet?

The opposite — high protein is specifically what protects muscle during weight loss, so you lose fat rather than muscle.

How quickly will I see results?

It depends on your deficit, activity and consistency. Sustainable fat loss is typically around 0.5–1kg per week.

Do I have to count calories?

Not with our meals — they're already portioned and labelled. You just eat them.

Is high protein safe?

For healthy people, yes. If you have kidney concerns, check with your doctor first.
