You've put in the work at the gym — now what you eat afterward helps determine how well you recover and progress. Post-workout nutrition doesn't need to be complicated, but getting the basics right makes a real difference. Here's a simple, no-nonsense guide.

What Your Body Needs After Training

After a workout, your body is primed to repair muscle and replenish energy. Two things help most:

  • Protein — provides the amino acids to repair and build muscle (aim for 30g+)
  • Carbohydrates — replenish the glycogen (stored energy) you burned, especially after harder or longer sessions

A meal combining both is ideal. Fat is fine too — it won't "block" recovery the way old myths claimed.

How Soon Should You Eat?

Despite the old "30-minute window" panic, you have more flexibility than you think. Aim to eat a protein-rich meal within a couple of hours of training. If you ate beforehand, you're already well covered. Total daily intake matters more than precise timing.

A Simple Post-Workout Formula

  • 30g+ protein (chicken, beef, fish, eggs, or a high-protein meal)
  • A source of quality carbs (rice, potato, whole grains — or a balanced meal that includes them)
  • Plenty of water to rehydrate
  • Add veg for micronutrients and fibre

The Easiest Way to Refuel

After training, the last thing you want is to start cooking. A pre-made, high-protein meal is the perfect post-workout solution — heat it in 4 minutes and you've got 30g+ of quality protein plus balanced carbs, no effort required. Our Large range (40g+ protein, 600–750 cal) is especially good for refuelling after hard sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to eat immediately after training?

No — within a couple of hours is fine, especially if you ate beforehand.

Is a protein shake enough?

A shake covers protein, but a balanced meal with carbs and micronutrients supports recovery better.

Should I eat carbs after a workout?

Yes, especially after longer or more intense sessions — carbs replenish glycogen.

What's a good post-workout meal?

Any meal with 30g+ protein and quality carbs. A high-protein ready meal does the job with zero prep.
