Comparing Meal Delivery Services in NZ: An Honest Guide
New Zealand has a healthy range of meal-delivery services, which is great for choice — but it makes picking one harder. Rather than tell you we're simply the best, here's an honest guide to what actually matters when comparing meal services, so you can choose the right fit for you.
What to Compare
1. Protein content.
This is the big one for most goals. Some services design around calories and let protein fall where it may. Look for a guaranteed protein minimum per meal. (Ours is 30g+, never cut to hit a calorie number — and 40g+ in our Large range.)
2. Fresh/chilled vs frozen.
Chilled "fresh" meals must be eaten within a few days and can lose nutrients as they sit. Snap-frozen meals last up to 3 months and lock in nutrition at peak freshness. Consider which suits your life. (We're snap-frozen.)
3. Flexibility.
Check for lock-in contracts, minimum orders, and how easy it is to skip, pause or cancel. (We let you skip, pause or cancel anytime.)
4. Food safety credentials.
An MPI-registered kitchen and any external approvals are worth knowing about. (We're MPI-registered and an ACC-approved supplier, VBI718.)
5. Delivery coverage and cost.
Where do they deliver, on what days, and at what shipping cost? (We deliver nationwide — Bay of Plenty Mondays $12, North Island Wednesdays $18, South Island $39.)
6. Price and value.
Compare per-meal cost and what you get — protein, ingredients, portion size. The cheapest isn't always the best value.
The NZ Landscape
There are several good services out there — some focused on fresh chilled meals, some on recipe boxes you cook yourself, some on frozen ready meals like us. Each suits different needs:
- Recipe-box services suit people who enjoy cooking but want the planning and shopping done
- Chilled ready-meal services suit those who want fresh-style meals and will eat them within days
- Frozen ready-meal services (like us) suit people who want maximum convenience, long shelf life and zero waste
Where We Fit
MealPrep.nz is built for people who want protein-dense, snap-frozen, food-safety-assured meals with real flexibility — and who value convenience and consistency over cooking themselves. If that's you, we're a strong fit. If you love cooking and want a recipe box, that's a different need (and that's okay).
